I, honestly, don't remember ever having a discussion about evolution with my parents. My father is a very intelligent man who finished a 30 year career in the Air Force as a Colonel. If I had gone to him and stated the earth is 10,000 years old and dinosaurs walked with Adam and Eve, he would have laughed in my face.Did any of you have parents who taught you that evolution is false.?
I was raised as a JW and they are very much creationists. I was afraid to take biology class in high school because I thought I would have to 'lie' about evolution being true on tests. When I went to college, I still had that 'fear' of evolution and losing faith in God and so I avoided biology classes. I so regret that because now that I am out of that religion and thinking for myself, I know what I missed. I have since read about it and the many ideas surrounding the mechanisms.
As far as my parents go, I think they were brainwashed by the JWs to believe or get out. I think they chose ignorance because they thought they had to, and then they believed the ignorance and 'taught' it to me. Did any of you have parents who taught you that evolution is false.?
I vaguely remember my mom being annoyed that they were teaching about evolution in my science class, but it was never an issue. She's a very intelligent woman who simply hasn't studied a lot of that stuff. The older she gets, the more open-minded she is.

I was taught evolution in primary school. My parents never told me that it was false. What I was grateful for and still is today is that they taught me that God is love and that the creation story is true. Now that I could use my brain and research for myself between evolution and creation; I came to the conclusion that God is real and creation is also.

I spent my childhood watching nature shows. I know some religious people say they see gods work in nature. I saw the majesty of nature and evolution just made sense to me. You don't even need any formal science degree to see how species are related and a god never came into my picture. Evolution wasn't even formally taught when I was in High School. It wasn't till years later in college I had any kind of formal education in evolution.
My folks are super old-school, pre-Vatican II Catholics that don't believe anything the Pope or the Bible doesn't tell them. They are biblical literalists. I was sent to Catholic boarding school my entire life ... and I don't think I once discussed evolution (or really science at all, for that matter) with them.
My being an atheist is a huge deal ... my being a grad student in evolutionary biology/marine science is horrifying to them - especially when topics on the origins of life come up.
We just don't talk about it anymore. It gets ugly. And I really hate to see my folks worked up. I'd like to think they are smart. What they do know and believe, they know well. They are just selectively intelligent, I suppose. Willfully ignorant, for sure. But I love them and their old school ways nonetheless :)

My parents are very religious fundamentalist protestants, and neither went to a day of high school, but both were smart enough to know that the mysteries of creation of the universe and its life were beyond simple story book explanations.
They believed God is ultimately responsible for it all, and that was enough. They never wanted to ignore or argue with basic science.

I was taught that both creationism and evolution were true to an extent. It was up to me to decide what that extent was. At the time, it was rather confusing as each theory seemed to contradict on many levels. But, now I'm very thankful that I wasn't given only one ';truth';. It gave me the Independence to search for my own answers.
Nope they sent me to church, Never need to ask about evaluation because the school crammed it down my throat, so they thought. On my test day the Questions on Evaluation ,I wrote out the truth from the Bible,LOL . She didn't mark them wrong,LOL. Noah did live 950 years, and we now only could live 120 years if we obey the Laws of the word and stay healthy. Note in the first 4 books of the Bible their are 613 Laws, now some of witch were for those days Most of witch are still needed today. And even God has his top 10 list ,LOL.
My parents didn't tell me a thing about evolution, What I learned about evolution I learned in high school and college (I did used to be a biology major), and looking at the ';facts'; to support evolution, I'd personally have to say that people and really really REALLY making a HUGE stretch to call it a scientific fact. I came to these conclusions on my own by carefully looking at the arguments and supposed evidence for evolution, and i'm sad to say that it really all falls short.
My Dad was a science teacher and my Mom was a nurse. We had tons of literature lying about the house, but the most we got out of them was nagging about getting the chores done and saying our daily prayers, and our prayers at meal times and our prayers when we slept and when we woke.....nothing about evolution at all. On another subject, I was just looking at your profile and your quote from Abraham Lincoln. I would like to point out that Lincoln was not converted until shortly before his death. He grieved a long time over the death of his son and one day a Christian was talking to him and reminded him that he would see his son again in heaven. It was at that moment that he ';saw the light'; and trusted Christ. So it doesn't surprise me that he made a remark like that in earlier years.

Lots of professors have been very successful in their fields, and just have the love of teaching others, and sharing their knowledge with others. Knowledge should be shared. However there are many who did the work got the diploma, couldn't succeed, and therefore got a teaching job because they knew the material, or the process, and could just send it on. It can go both ways, There are certainly those that can't and teach, and those that have succeeded, and want to pass their knowledge along.

I believe children should be kept from religion until they are old enough to decide for themselves. They should be presented all religions and religious standpoints. Let them choose.
I think that a child should never learn about christianity. I only say this because of my experience with christians and because i was one. not a true christian is a sorry excuse, because i was one of those fundie types too.
I do think that if you had a bad experience with christians you should share that with your child instead. Also it whould be a good idea to give the child a book like the dark side of christian history so they wont be an easy prey for christian evangelists.
From the Christian perspective, part of our religious beliefs require us to teach our Children about God. There are many Christians, I am one of them, who do not see a conflict between Christianity and evolution.
Teaching a child about God does not make him or her a Christian. That is something they have to decide for themselves. I believe it is also important to teach children about science, art, math, history, and other religions. They can be taught that there are people who believe differently than we do. And, I think most young adults go through a period were they question, or at least re-examine their beliefs. I know I did, and the result was a strengthening of my Christian faith.

Since religion is a complete waste of time (no religious precept has any verifiable predictive power whatever), I would not (and in the case of my own children, did not) teach it at all. Evolution, however, is a well-established scientific theory (warning to cretins who claim that it's ';just a theory'; -- ';established'; means ';established as factual';) which must be understood if one is to have any understanding of how to attack questions such as what sort of drugs to develop or what may be the effects of using genetically-engineered crops.

Every child should be taught about every religion or lack there of before they leave your house. Why? Because if you don't when they get out into the world they will be taking your beliefs with them, not their own. Teach them everything that is available, let them decide what is best for them. Teaching fantasy and mythology only teaches them that it is possible to weave intricate and facinating STORIES. It may teach something of english and literature but, it is not the textbook that some claim it to be.
I have and will continue to teach my boys how to think with an open objective mind that considers the evidence and then draw conclusions.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Most kids rebel against their parents at some time in their lives. Even in totalitarian states kids rebel. Read about the 'edelweiss pirates' in Nazi Germany. They did some great things and some even died for it. What you say about Christianity may be true but its the way of the world. As a child I went to a church school and was in the church choir. Now I'm an atheist and find it difficult to understand how anyone can be religious.
They are children...they will believe what we as their parents teach them. They can always change their mind when they are grown up.

Its up to the parents (though I dont believe it should be) What religion the child is. I think its well and good for them to 'inform' but converting is wrong. If the child believes thats what they want, then they should be allowed into the religion, then they can chose to leave when their older if they wish.

I believe children should be kept from religion until they are old enough to decide for themselves. They should be presented all religions and religious standpoints. Let them choose.
I think that a child should never learn about christianity. I only say this because of my experience with christians and because i was one. not a true christian is a sorry excuse, because i was one of those fundie types too.
I do think that if you had a bad experience with christians you should share that with your child instead. Also it whould be a good idea to give the child a book like the dark side of christian history so they wont be an easy prey for christian evangelists.
From the Christian perspective, part of our religious beliefs require us to teach our Children about God. There are many Christians, I am one of them, who do not see a conflict between Christianity and evolution.
Teaching a child about God does not make him or her a Christian. That is something they have to decide for themselves. I believe it is also important to teach children about science, art, math, history, and other religions. They can be taught that there are people who believe differently than we do. And, I think most young adults go through a period were they question, or at least re-examine their beliefs. I know I did, and the result was a strengthening of my Christian faith.

Since religion is a complete waste of time (no religious precept has any verifiable predictive power whatever), I would not (and in the case of my own children, did not) teach it at all. Evolution, however, is a well-established scientific theory (warning to cretins who claim that it's ';just a theory'; -- ';established'; means ';established as factual';) which must be understood if one is to have any understanding of how to attack questions such as what sort of drugs to develop or what may be the effects of using genetically-engineered crops.
Teaching your child the truth is the best thing you can do for them.It is the best gift you can give them.To teach them different things is confusing.I have always wanted my kids to be armed with the truth in this world.

Every child should be taught about every religion or lack there of before they leave your house. Why? Because if you don't when they get out into the world they will be taking your beliefs with them, not their own. They need to make the decision for themselves (as the bible clearly states) and they need to be informed of all other religions first. Teach them young so as they get older they will have the opportunity to research every religion and figure out which one holds the most water if any. And how are you as a theist supposed to combat the theory's of evolution if you don't know anything about them!? That drives me nuts. They seem to think that their faith is all an atheist needs to see to believe and they can say ';I know creation is right because I believe'; not being told about other religions and not being explained the idea of evolution and being afraid to ask questions to my very Christian parents is the exact reason why now I am no longer one. Now I researched things myself and I know the truth.

Forget religion, a child should be taught fact, not stories
Children should be taught what their parents wish them to be taught.
Teach them everything that is available, let them decide what is best for them. Teaching fantasy and mythology only teaches them that it is possible to weave intricate and facinating STORIES. It may teach something of english and literature but, it is not the textbook that some claim it to be.
I have and will continue to teach my boys how to think with an open objective mind that considers the evidence and then draw conclusions.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Most kids rebel against their parents at some time in their lives. Even in totalitarian states kids rebel. Read about the 'edelweiss pirates' in Nazi Germany. They did some great things and some even died for it. What you say about Christianity may be true but its the way of the world. As a child I went to a church school and was in the church choir. Now I'm an atheist and find it difficult to understand how anyone can be religious.
They are children...they will believe what we as their parents teach them. They can always change their mind when they are grown up.

Its up to the parents (though I dont believe it should be) What religion the child is. I think its well and good for them to 'inform' but converting is wrong. If the child believes thats what they want, then they should be allowed into the religion, then they can chose to leave when their older if they wish.
This has turned into a debate about One view being true and one being false, even when the question was shouldnt they have a choice.
If Christians want to believe in God they can. If Muslims want to believe in Allah they can. If Atheists belive that science is the answer then they can.
I personally am an Atheist, my Parents are Christian (not strong though) So I found it easy to chose my own view. There are people I know who have VERY Strong Catholic parents and Catholosism has been passed down in their famly. During a Science lesson on Carbon Dating awhile back, this person Argued with the teacher about how he was telling Lies and how the world had not been around Millions of years. I think parents have effect that and because of the conditioning this person went through as a child they will always follow that belief. So, after my longwinded answer, I believe Parents should 'teach' like in RS lessons, not 'preach' like in church. Forcing a child to go to church and sunday school and stopping them from exploring other things is wrong.

Last night I posted a question regarding the meaning of the word ';Prophesised'; in Matt 7:22-23. Most of the people who have answered seem to understand the meaning of those verses as I do, that ';prophesy'; in that verse refers to teach.
Well if that is the case, doesn't that show that a prophet is not necessarily someone who foretells the future but also someone who is teaching the word of God? (I think ';YES';, a prophet is someone who is spreading the word of God Jehovah!)
If that then is the case, Matthew 24:11 ';And many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many.'; also refers to those religions that teach erroneous doctrine and make erroneous conclusions based on the Bible. Does it not?
Further, Deuteronomy 18:22, also refers to those religions and proves them to be false prophets.

Paul warned the church at Galatia about those who preach another gospel contrary to what he had already preached/taught to them (Galatians 1:6-12). In fact he said to let them be accursed. There is only one way, one truth, one foundation. That is the word of God, not men's interpretations of it or their misguided doctrines because they pulled Scripture out of context.
Jesus gave the apostles the doctrine that they should preach (Luke 24:44-49), and we see in the book of Acts that the believers continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine, and in prayers, etc. The apostle Paul wrote that, as a wise master builder, he laid the foundation for the Corinthians that they should build upon. There is no other foundation, because that foundation is Jesus Christ and the word of God (1Corinthians 3:10-11, acts 4:8-12, 1Peter 2:4-8, Ephesians 2:18-22, Matthew 7:24-29). A false prophet/teacher will not lay the same foundation or build completely upon that foundation that is already laid.
One other thing about false teachers, or those who hold to a different doctrine; we are not to receive them into our houses nor bid them God speed (blessings, peace, be well). If we do, then we are share in their evil works/actions/occupation (2John 1:9-11).
