If ';Prophesy'; in Matthew 7:22-23 means ';Teach'; then aren't ';False Prophets'; = ';False Teachers';?

Last night I posted a question regarding the meaning of the word ';Prophesised'; in Matt 7:22-23. Most of the people who have answered seem to understand the meaning of those verses as I do, that ';prophesy'; in that verse refers to teach.





Well if that is the case, doesn't that show that a prophet is not necessarily someone who foretells the future but also someone who is teaching the word of God? (I think ';YES';, a prophet is someone who is spreading the word of God Jehovah!)





If that then is the case, Matthew 24:11 ';And many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many.'; also refers to those religions that teach erroneous doctrine and make erroneous conclusions based on the Bible. Does it not?





Further, Deuteronomy 18:22, also refers to those religions and proves them to be false prophets.

God has asked us not to try to predict when is the time of Jesus' return. The Watchtower has done that many times and now they even have the outrageous claim that Jesus already returned in 1914 INVISIBLY. You appear to be correct and a true prophet is someone who spreads the words of Jesus.

Interestingly, Jehovah's Witnesses apply the term ';prophet'; only in a very limited sense to themselves as a religion, not to individuals. The Scriptures indicate that whenever Jehovah purposes to execute judgment upon a people, he always makes arrangement for a 'prophet's work' as a warning. Their self-description as a ';prophet'; (in this limited sense) does not indicate special inspired knowledge or foreknowledge, but their willingness to perform Christ's assigned warning work in our day leading up to Armageddon.





What group is working harder than Jehovah's Witnesses to preach God's message globally (as Noah did before the Deluge)?

The Biblical gift of prophesy includes expounding/teaching the Bible and foretelling future events. It doesn't have to be both every time, and more often it is expounding from the Bible.

To best guard yourself against falsehood and false teachers - know the truth. To spot a counterfeit, study the real thing. Any believer who is, “rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15), and who makes a careful study of the Bible, can identify false doctrine. For example, a believer who has read the activities of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Matthew 3:16-17 will immediately question any doctrine that denies the Trinity.

The word ';prophesied'; in Mat. 7:22 means to foretell, to speak under inspiration, or to exercise the prophetic office. So to say that prophesy in that verse refers to teaching is not entirely accurate. However, having said that, we need to keep that particular word in that verse in context with the rest of the verse and passage, and with the rest of the scriptures. When we do this we understand that Jesus is referring to false prophets, false apostles, false preachers, false teachers, etc.





You are correct in believing that this applies to those who do not preach/teach the word of God correctly. Paul warned the church at Galatia about those who preach another gospel contrary to what he had already preached/taught to them (Galatians 1:6-12). In fact he said to let them be accursed. There is only one way, one truth, one foundation. That is the word of God, not men's interpretations of it or their misguided doctrines because they pulled Scripture out of context.





Jesus gave the apostles the doctrine that they should preach (Luke 24:44-49), and we see in the book of Acts that the believers continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine, and in prayers, etc. The apostle Paul wrote that, as a wise master builder, he laid the foundation for the Corinthians that they should build upon. There is no other foundation, because that foundation is Jesus Christ and the word of God (1Corinthians 3:10-11, acts 4:8-12, 1Peter 2:4-8, Ephesians 2:18-22, Matthew 7:24-29). A false prophet/teacher will not lay the same foundation or build completely upon that foundation that is already laid.





One other thing about false teachers, or those who hold to a different doctrine; we are not to receive them into our houses nor bid them God speed (blessings, peace, be well). If we do, then we are share in their evil works/actions/occupation (2John 1:9-11).
