One of my Anthro professors claims that reading comprehension is no longer taught in the USA,true or false ?

False, comprehension is taught since second grade in Texas schools and in 3rd grade the Reading test is very important.

Maybe the professor should go to REAL LIFE instead of living in his/her privileged academia world.

Como dicen en espa帽ol, encerrado en su torre de marfil. One of my Anthro professors claims that reading comprehension is no longer taught in the USA,true or false ?
False. Your professor is wrong. The focus of all the content areas, as well as language arts courses, is on comprehension. How can you learn anything in school if you don't understand the text that you are reading?

As an art/reading/writing middle school teacher I have to tell you that I am constantly teaching comprehension strategies to my students. I teach reading to low-level readers, it is important to work concurrently with language, vocabulary, and fluency to lead to comprehension.

By third grade, many students are reading to learn, not learning to read. When you read to learn, your focus is precisely reading comprehension.

Tell your teacher that he/she is wrong... We, at the formative levels are teaching comprehension to all who pass through our classrooms. It is, after all, part of the curriculum...One of my Anthro professors claims that reading comprehension is no longer taught in the USA,true or false ?
False.

Comprehension is still taught across grade levels.

Your prof needs to spend some time out of the ivory tower.
False. Reading comprehension skills are emphasized.

Advanced vocabulary is what is not taught, except in Honors/Advanced Placement classes for the ';smartest'; students.
False! I had to help my high school age son with his homework as well as my 8 yr. old last year. This ga. education.
Your professor is wrong.

Reading comprehension is taught in ALL grades across the country.
Wrong -- it is still taught...

Unfortunately, the use of text messages has seriously affected how people communicate and comprehend what they read- just look at all of the spellings on some of the questions in Yahoo Answers!
