'I will set no evil before mine eyes.' Look this scripture up in the Bible and you will throw away your TV. I did 30 years ago and never regreted it.
I agree with Ululating Iraqi, as long as you don't bow down and worship them (like a statue) then I guess it's okay.
It's not literal. People aren't actually worshipping the contestants and the word idol can be used in different ways.

I'm not sure about the whole God part of things, but it is definitely against good taste.
