What does Chris mean when he says Catholicism teaches a false gospel of good works that leads to eternal hell?

He gives the Bible passage, Galatians 1:6-9. Does this passage say that a gospel requiring good works is a false gospel? What does Chris mean when he says Catholicism teaches a false gospel of good works that leads to eternal hell?
Hi,

It means nothing other than the pot trying to call the kettle black.

Ah, but this Galatians teaching is a two way street that can boomerang back in one's face. Many Christians other than Catholics also believe Eternal Security is a damndable doctrine and a false gospel in itself:

';The teachers of eternal security are masters of deception. How they avoid such a large body of Scriptures and distort others to present this doctrine is truly an infernal talent. To distort any teaching (especially something related to salvation itself) such as the believer's security is most serious, but how much more when these grace changers connect eternal security with the gospel itself. Charles Stanley, the most dangerous eternal security teacher alive, has boldly done this very thing. Imagine teaching a heresy as the gospel itself. This is, in fact, what is being done at this present time. Woe to Stanley and all others who preach their security-in-sin gospel:

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! (Gal 1:8,9)

So what is the real gospel that Paul preached and first-century Christians of the Bible believed? It is found in a Scripture that the eternal security teachers like to skip over when citing the gospel from 1 Cor. 15:

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. (1 Cor 15:2)

Clearly, the real gospel has a conditional security written all over it, in contrast to what the savage wolves in sheep's clothing want us all to believe.';

Mike KWhat does Chris mean when he says Catholicism teaches a false gospel of good works that leads to eternal hell?
A life of good works is justified numerous times in the Bible:

Mt 7:21 - not he who says ';lord, lord';, but he who does the will of my father

Mt 19:16-17 - to have life, keep the commandments

Jn 14:21 - he who keeps my commandments loves me

Rom 2:2-8 - eternal life by perseverence in good works

Gal 5:4-6 - nothing counts but faith working through love

Eph 2:8-10 - we are created in Christ Jesus for good works

Phil 2:12-13 - work out salvation with fear and trembling

Jam 2:14-24 - a man is justified by works and not faith alone

Isn't that MORE than enough proof, Chris?

He means that unless you subscribe to his narrow little viewpoint, he feels totally justified in condemning you to hell.

He and his ilk completely ignore the passage in James which clearly states that ';Faith without works is dead.'; He also is ignorant of the true Catholic view on salvation, which is that salvation is through Christ's sacrifice on the Cross. There is no other means of salvation except through Jesus' Precious Blood.

We *were* saved through Christ's death, we *are* saved by obedience to God (which includes doing the things that He commanded us to do, including caring for others), and we *will be* saved through the grace of God and the gift of final perserverence.

And that's what the Catholic church teaches and believes. Sorry to disappoint all those who think that we believe we can ';buy'; our way to Heaven.
The only place I can find faith alone in the Bible is where St. James says we are NOT saved by faith alone. Faith alone must be a doctrine of men spread by false teachers.

Allow me to explain further as to why Catholic Christians hear this opinion that we are saved by faith alone and we recoil at the thought of faith alone regardless of the fact that the Scriptures condemns such heresy. We see the Bible teaching that both faith and works come from God's grace and that neither come from our own efforts. Surely we have free will and can refuse this grace that can only be the work of God and not of our initiating efforts. We are simply responding to God's call with faith and works, which I believe St. James was illustrating in his writing, saying that faith without works is dead since they all come from the same source, God's grace.

In Christ

It means that

1) He doesn't understand the passage or the context

2) He doesn't understand the salvation doctrine taught by Roman Catholicism

3) He is either unaware of, or chooses to ignore, the scriptures which actually support (in a general way) the Roman Catholic doctrine of salvation

Chris is the false teacher...a wolf in sheep's clothing. He is being misled my Satan into attacking the true Church that Christ established.
I find it hard to believe that ones actions are of no consequence. If all that is required is passive belief then the devil and his angels would be saved. Hell, if I believed I could drop an atomic bomb on a city and it wouldn't matter.

If ones actions are of no consequence then why would you care that I'm gay or that Planned Parenthood performs abortions? Ultimately if virtue is of no consequence then sin is of no consequence.

If there is a last judgment will we be asked anything more than if we believed in the death and resurrection of Jesus?

Sorry it doesn't make sense to me.
If you believe in the bible you have to believe in the Pope and the Catholic Church including tradition .Tradition was used to canonize the Bible by the Catholic Church .Christ gave authority to the Catholic Church under the Holy Spirit to canonized the Bible. What criteria was used, tradition oral teaching passed on and the Catholic Churches beliefs, under the guidance of the Holy spirit. The Catholic Church canonized the bible under Christ鈥檚 authority. So how can any books be put into the bible that go against Catholic beliefs and teachings (or removed) . So then if you believe the Catholic Church is false and not Christian, that its doctrine is false, then bible has no meaning and the Catholic Church had no authority to put the bible together in the first place. You would then have to throw out your bible. The Catholic Church teaches the same now as it did then nothing new has been added if so tell me but you cant because you know nothing of Church history or the history of your Protestant faith. The early Church Father鈥檚 all celebrated the Eucharist and the sacraments and all believed it to be the Body Blood Soul And Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, as the Catholic Church does today. So who Gave the Authority to a , mentally unbalanced, diseased character Martin Luther hero of the Reformation. His intemperance, his persecution mania, his varying moods, were the origin of his permanent contradictions. Who gave him authority to add words to the Bible and remove 7 books and believe in his doctrine of Sola Scriptura which is found no place in the Bible. And all the made up doctrine that followed made up by men. Your either a Christian and believe the teachings of the Catholic Church or you are a hypocrite and heretic certainly not a Christian you see the word Christian was coined by a Catholic Bishop ordained By Peter himself and is a Catholic word.
Chris thinks that all he needs is fire insurance.

What I wonder is what he thinks Jesus meant when he told people to repent after he had forgiven their sins, or ';go and sin no more.'; Why repent if your deeds don't matter?
It means Chris is a bigot and a liar

James 2:24 - ';You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.';
Christian ity is not the doctrine of Yahshua

its the doctrine changed by men.

It says there in Galatians that anyone teaching a Gospel other than that which is presented, is leading themselves and others to hell. A false gospel of works falls in this category.

Salvation is by faith alone in the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4). It is not by works.
ANY gospel other than the one that Christ preached (by GRACE are you saved THROUGH FAITH) is a false gospel. So, the way I see it, any religion that requires anything but belief in the death, burial, and Resurrection of Christ is a false gospel.
