Christians......... How can we know if someone makes a false teaching?

Christians.. How can we know if someone makes a false teaching? I certainly don't want to believe in a false teaching..

So how can we know?

Are there any Bible verses to answer my question?

Or anything?

How can we know if a teaching is a false one.. or a true one??Christians......... How can we know if someone makes a false teaching?
If you read and study the bible you will be able to know what is true or not. Also you have to find out what the motives are in the false teacher. Someone can accidentally teach a wrong thing because they didn't research the topic. But it is wiser for you to study for yourself and then you can prove the false teacher wrong. That is also the Holy Spirits job. Matthew 7:16 to 20 you will know them by their fruit. How they live and act. and by the results of their teaching.Christians......... How can we know if someone makes a false teaching?
We must study the Bible ourselves to verify the things we are taught are true. Paul was used by God to write several books in the New Testament and yet the Bible refers to the Bereans as being more noble than the Thessalonians because they searched the scriptures to make sure the things he said were true. If they were supposed to check out the things that Paul said, shouldn't we also check out the things that our pastors and teachers say? If the teaching does not line up with the Bible, it's false.

Ac 17:11

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

KJV
Have a solid ground in biblical truth. Gain as much wisdom and understanding as you can from the Word of God. Ask good and reliable people from your church about certain doctrines. The only way you can know between truth and error is if you know the truth. If something does not go according to the Bible, then it is false. The Bible, what God says, is your ultimate authority. You can't stare at something with a blank face and make a judgment based off your own intuition. If somebody asks a question that is kind of vague to you and you're like ';well I don't really know'; investigate for yourself from the only reliable source. When you study the Scripture, be aware of getting the context right and meaning correct. You must be willing to pursue for the right answers when you have those profound questions. I think if we do have that passion for the truth, we will seek and find it but yes sometimes it takes the effort to get there. I know I might sound kind of pessimistic because this seems stressful, I won't deny that it sometimes is, but there ARE many spiritual counterfeiters around us that every one of us faces.

ROM 16:17-18 I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

2CO 2:17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God. 11:4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

COL 2:4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of

this world rather than on Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions. 20-24 Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: ';Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!';? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings.

Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

1TI 1:3-4 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote

controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith. 6-7 Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 6:3-5 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions

and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

2 Tit 4:3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 2:14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 16-18 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and

Philetus who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 3:6-9 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the

truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

HEB 13:9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those who eat them.

2 Pet 2:3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.

2 JO 1:7 Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in

the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 9-11 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ

does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.

JUD 1:4 For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
If what they teach is what is in the bible, then they are okay. Now if they are teaching something that isn't in the bible and you follow them, both you and they are in trouble. Is there someone in particular that you are wondering about? I believe there is a part in III John that talks about false teaching.
I think when your heart is right with God, he will give signs to us of those false teachings. I don't think there is much more of an answer. Because yes, anyone could have created the bible, and then we were taught to believe what it says. But would God have not separated some from believing that, or the truth? Of course he would have. I think that is how so many other religions were created. Because one person did not believe in the truth, and decided to create his own religion, through changing some things that were the truth. He wanted the power just like satan did. Therefore when he did this, he created many types of religion out there. But there is only one true God out there, and only he knows the truth for what it is. Like I said, if it were wrong, God would show us if it were, if you truly have been born again.
God's Word tells us how....You discern everything with His Word, the Bible!! You are responsible for what you listen to and believe. And the only way you will know for certain is to check it out with the Bible. Once you know God and His Word more intimately, you will know in your heart also. God bless
Pray to God for guidance and discernment and study the Bible. The more you study, the more you will learn. If you pray for Him to teach you through His Word then you would be surprised at what you'd learn. He will equip you with everything you need to discern between truth and false teachings.
We take the teaching we heard and compare it to what the Bible says. We do our own research! Like the Bereans in Acts 17, they ';recieved the Word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.'; And they were checking the teachings of PAUL and SILAS against the Word of God. So if they were checking Paul and Silas's teachings, how much more should be be checking our modern day pastors and ministers teachings?
There are lots of verses warning us of false teachings, and false phrophets. 2Tim 3-16 tells us tho that the pillar and foundation of truth is the church of the Living God. That means if you truly want to be certain, you must look outside of the scriptures to the Church, good advice then, and now.
by studying the word of GOD so we can rightly divide the word of truth. We will know what is right by what the scriptures say.

2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Test it three ways.

1. Check that it is consistent with what the bible says

2. Check that it is reasonable

3. Check that it makes sense to other Christians
You can tell it's false if it's extrabiblical, for instance, the trinity apostacy.
Just let the Holy Spirit guide you. Also read the bible. Their are some words in the bible where they do talk about false prophets.
hmm very good question.

i guess just compare it to things jesus taught.

if they say God made a revolation to them, it a lie coz He made the final revolation through Jesus Christ
A good litmus test is whether there is a book and a video you get for your ';donation';.
Read the bible and if something he said is not in it than he gave a false teaching.

please go to http://freewebs.com/projecttreehouse
Look it up in the BIBLE. Theres a lot of False prophets now days.
Read your Bible
All you have to do is listen and read in this room .....can you hear his sickness crying out............beat him down....he's a liar
you can feel it.
Watch Joel Osteen.
He asks you for money.
You EXAMINE THE EVIDENCE.

Of course, you know where THAT leads.
if s/he asks for money or if they aren't jesus
If what he is teaching isn't in the Bible, it is false!
';The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?'; Jeremiah 17:9

We are born with very deceptive hearts. How many of you have seen other people convince themselves, lie to themselves, about something because ';the heart wants what it wants.'; Of course you do it yourself too. The moments of time when we see ourselves accurately become closer and closer together when we love God and serve Him but... if we're honest God is constantly trying to reveal layers of truth to us about ourselves so we can grow in Him. At least Satan doesn't have power to put blinders over our eyes, but we still do. And we can hand him back the power... God lets us.

I truly believe that many who are in error are deceived, either by themselves or Satan, and that it is more rare to have a man like Hitler who is knowingly and purposefully trying to deceive for evil purposes. That is the insidiousness of it... our own hearts work against us.

We have to daily deny our flesh and pick up our cross if we want to have a chance of discerning the truth. We have to fear the Lord and seek wisdom, we have to obey the Word of God... Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners

or sit in the seat of mockers.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff

that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.

It isn't enough to ';study'; we need to ';delight'; in the Word. How many of you have heard scriptures taken out of context and warped beyond belief to say something that really isn't there? Many study the scriptures supposedly to ';find the truth'; but are really just trying to prove their own theories and opinions, or to find contraversies they can get people all ';het up'; about.

What I'm saying is, this isn't a simple answer and it is a simple answer. Cling to the simple truths from God's Holy Word you know to be true and don't be quick to believe the next ';new doctrine'; that comes along. It is okay to say ';I'm not sure about that 'theory' about what the scriptures are saying there, and I may never be.'; Christ said the most important instructions for us are loving God with everything you are and have, and loving your neighbor as yourself. Ask yourself if this teaching contradicts the spirit of those primary directives.

Oh and sometimes when you hear a false teaching you have a feeling of ';caution'; about it right away. If you ever have that feeling it is time to double-check and triple-check what they're saying against the Bible... even if what they're preaching seems like ';established doctrine.'; Don't limit yourself to checking the ';specific passage/s'; they preached, but take a look at the bigger picture of what Scripture says, how it fits in context, what the original language says, what their purpose behind teaching this is. Be aware that some people like to be divisive, it's their nature, so they find and highlight things that are confusing on purpose.

I Corinthians 13:12 (New Living Translation) Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
